Looking back, it made life even more difficult for me when I was very young in ways that I found difficult to understand. In those days, kids suffering from ADHD were simply written off as being stupid.
Life has not been easy. I guess it is tough for everyone, but tougher because I was an institutionalised child. I was troubled with ADHD and found school mundane and boring, resulting in my not doing well and obtaining a poor education.
I was always attracted to soldiering and besides it would also provide me with a roof over my head and three meals a day. I joined the Rhodesian Light Infantry but soon became bored with peacetime soldiering. I then became an under age mercenary with 5 Commando in the Congo and served for eighteen months.
Returning to Rhodesia much later, I served as a Clandestine operator in the famous Selous Scouts. I have since obtained three University Degrees and have learned to overcome adversity the hard way. This is my story.
Barry Stranack was born in April 1945, he was institutionalized in St Martin’s boy’s home in Durban which was a breeding ground to become a tough and determined personality. Later, these harsh life experiences led him to become an 8th Dan karate black belt. He left school with a poor education that impoverished his career choices. After many difficult experiences Barry ended up homeless as a teenager and chose to join the Rhodesian Light Infantry. Here he excelled as a soldier, he became bored with peacetime soldiering and became a mercenary in the Congo.
He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. He later joined the famous Selous Scouts and became a clandestine operator. He left the army in 1980 and went overseas and qualified as a Chiropractor, has a diploma in Roentgenology, has a Master’s degree and studied medicine in the Dominican Republic.
His first book, Demand a Brave Heart, his biography, describes his difficult and successful life, that he has led. His Military and Intelligence background make for riveting reading in his Spy novels.
Barry is currently semi-retired and resides in Pretoria. His difficult, dangerous and exciting life-experiences make him a spellbinding storyteller.
