This non-fiction book takes the reader on an expedition that sees a boyhood fascination with the glamour of ‘adventure’ become a reality in
later adult life. It takes the form of a solitary hike over two thousand kilometres down the course of the Orange River to the sea on South Africa’s West Coast.
It is an adventure of dogged determination on the part of man and beast. Both try each other’s patience to the limit, resulting in hilarious happenings, and many new friendships forged.
Hugh’s career was chequered to say the least. He did several stints as a field assistant on prospecting ventures for diamonds. He’s been a barman, a market researcher, a copywriter and worked in hotel management. In the late 80s he went to the swamps of Botswana in search of the legendary Okavango polar bear. There he met cartoonist Tony Grogan with his ever present sketchpad and pencil. They became good friends and have met up many times ever since.
Hugh finally settled in the Karoo where he ran a one-man welding shop. He is now semi-retired and lives in Prince Albert where he can often be seen tramping across the koppies of the Karoo driven by a never diminishing curiosity.
