Overview
Deslocado is Portuguese for ‘displaced’. This is a story of redemption set in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique in the mid-1990s, a time of nervous energy, opportunity and fear, in a region that has only recently emerged from bitter colonial wars of independence and subsequent civil wars. The peace is delicate and rancorous, racial attitudes coagulate, and retribution is borne on the wind of change. It is here, in 1995, in the steaming Mozambican port city of Beira, a cauldron of venality and intrigue, that Mike, a white Zimbabwean and former soldier, meets Phoebe, a black prostitute.

Knowing the style and the author of Fire Force, I was curious to read this departure story from Chris Cocks. I was not disappointed. Colourful characters and descriptions of Beira and Zimbabwe that are guaranteed to raise a smile from anyone who knows the region. A delightful read.

Atmospheric, evocative, taut and gripping. This is a real insight into an often-overlooked time in Africa’s history. The sheer sense of place is impressive and reminiscent of Grahame Greene at his best.
—Elle Murphree (author)

I didn’t expect to find themes of a very welcome anti-colonialism and anti-racism in a thriller most of whose central characters are white Zimbabwean ex-soldiers. But I did, and over and above that it’s a great story of love and humanity shining through a divided and unequal world. Recommended.
—C. P. Turbett (author)

I read both of Chris Cocks’s other books and this one, like those, make the characters come alive, especially in the Rhodesian context. I can hear the people physically speak. Great job!

Chris Cocks

Chris Cocks was born in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) in 1957 as the sun was setting on the British Empire. He saw service in the ‘bush war’; his two autobiographical accounts—Fire Force: A Trooper’s War in the Rhodesian Light Infantry and Out of Action (formerly Survival Course: Rhodesian Dénouement and the War of Self) —evoke the era. Fire Force is now regarded as a classic on war and has sold over 40,000 copies.

His novel, Deslocado Redemption, set in Beira, Mozambique, explores post-colonial racial attitudes in southern Africa, while A Colonial Boy: The Soundtrack of an African Childhood examines the author’s childhood. He lives in Nelspruit.
