Overview
Jeannot's War is a novel about the exploits of a young Jewish immigrant to South Africa

Jeannot’s War is a novel about the exploits of a young Jewish immigrant to South Africa who, by virtue of his residency in Bloemfontein, becomes involved in fighting on behalf of the Orange Free State Republic against the British Empire during the Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902.

It is constructed around a series of actual letters written by the main character, Jeannot Weinberg (the grandfather of the author), both from the battlefields of the Boer War and the prison camps where he landed up. It reflects the courage, steadfastness and enthusiasm displayed by Jeannot is his peregrination through immigration to South Africa, growing up in a new and strange land, and ultimately fighting for its freedom.

It also describes the inhumane actions of the British towards the civilian population, their policy of ‘scorched earth’ and the creation of concentration camps in which more than 25,000 women and children died as a result of malnutrition, poor sanitation and lack of medical facilities.

Peter Weinberg

Peter Weinberg is the grandson of the main character in the book, Jeannot Weinberg. Peter was born and raised in South Africa, first in Durban (where he graduated high school), then in Johannesburg (where he graduated university with degrees in law and accounting). He left South Africa in 1987 to live in London with his family, including his son David (then one year old) – David’s middle name is Jeannot in honor of his great grandfather. Peter moved to the United States in 1996, and lives in Chicago with his second wife Ellyn. He has worked as a global human resources strategy consultant for the past twenty years.

“Jeannot’s War” is his first novel, and  is constructed around a series of actual letters written by the main character, Jeannot Weinberg , both from the battlefields of the Boer War and the prison camps where he landed up. It also relies on a set of family memoirs written by his great-aunt Bertha, which traces the history of the family from the time they left their family home in Rigs, Latvia, through the period of the Boer War.
