After almost two weeks of continuous fighting in the Colenso region, General Buller finally broke through, in the rugged Thukela Heights area, to relieve Ladysmith. The Boers fought back heroically but they were eventually overwhelmed by the numerical superiority of the British forces.

Ken Gillings was a life member of the South African Military History Society and had studied the historical sites and battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal extensively. He regularly conducted tours across this region and has written a number of books and articles about the Battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. He had also been responsible for arranging international military history conferences in the region which has focused national and international attention on the battlefields.
